You need to have the courage of
Mahatma Gandhi to get kicked out of
a train in a lonely station, on a night,
at a distant land and still fight back to
lead men towards the light.
Demosthenes worked out a way to
conquer the obstacles that nature had
placed in the way of his oratorical
career and the weak-voiced boy went
on to become the greatest orator the
world has ever heard.
All these names have one thing in
common; they were winners, not
quitters. They faced a myriad of
obstacles and hindrances without
compromising their mission and their
vision. They were ready to face as
many failures as required to achieve
success. Those who dare, have a
fortune at their feet. These real-life
incidents should inspire us to break all
the stumbling blocks of life and fulfil
our dreams.
I too had a similar experience proving
the proverb true. A childhood prank
by one of my relatives proved to be a
nightmare for my entire family,
witnessing my neighbour fall from the
balcony on the second floor. This put
him in the hospital with multiple
fractures and comatose for several
months. This incident gifted me with
acrophobia and glossophobia, which I
struggled to overcome.
My interest in reading biographies
about successful eminent personalities
has indeed instilled in me, courage
and confidence and not to rest until I
taste the fruit of my achievement. It

was my parents who boosted my
confidence with encouragement,
leading me through the challenges. It
took me through several failures and
falls but my strong determination
never let me give up.
Initially, it was difficult to accept my
failures, but I put more effort each
time. Every chance of participating in
competitions gradually freed me of
these phobias. And, today I’m proud
of achieving several speech
competitions. Most notably, I have
bagged the Runner-up in
Phenomenon 2018, an interschool
personality event. A great
achievement indeed! My identity has
been renewed, thanks to my
determination. I now enjoy air travel
and adventurous rides and I’m still
brushing up for more.
Losers are those who don’t believe in
their capabilities. To learn or achieve
something, will-power acts as a
catalyst that enhances the speed of
action. Luck and opportunities never
bother those who fight for their
dream. Focus and faith in one’s work
are necessary to reach one’s goal. Ifs
and buts are the mutterings of
weakness but all this will vanish when
faced with will-power.
The story of man’s progress from
chaos to order and from barbarism to
civilisation is the story of his will-
power pitted against all the hostile
forces of nature. Therefore the
proverb ‘they can who think they can’
