CHAPTER 15
There was a pin-drop silence in the villa. The mystery of ghost
was revealed and Mr. Vaken’s crime was admitted by him.
Thoughts of REVENGE kept running through Shemp’s mind.
MR. HOVER SHEMP: So, ultimately you confessed your offence,
that is what I wanted. My soul did not rest in peace and got
converted into an evil spirit. My evil spirit haunted this
mansion and when you reached here, I poisoned my mind with
ideas of hate and revenge. I confined myself to my store-room
chamber.
Knowing the fact that I was acrophobic, you pushed me
downhill. You wished to betray our year of friendship, just to
get a little bit of spotlight. Truly, an honest enemy is better
than a false friend. Disappearing the chairs, making the
crossmark on your family portrait, the lid incident and
emptying the water-bottles, all were my attempts to frighten
you. It is very difficult for me to believe that my true friend
betrayed me in such a manner and gave me an untimely death.
Mrs. Vaken, You tell what’s my fault? Do you agree with me?
MRS. VAKEN: You are right on your part. But, as a wife it’s my
duty to save my husband. I apologize for his deed. Your tragic
story touched me deeply. I have full sympathy with you. He did
all this to give us a happy and better life. But, his way was not
